Though I doubt any of my ideas will come to fruition, I still wanted to write down the color concepts I had and my reasoning behind each color. My thought process is that I must avoid any pink. Pink is too obvious for anything ballet related and there are already enough pinks out there.
Don Quixote or La Esmeralda: Blackened red. It may sound silly to lump both ballets together under one color (especially since Don Quixote is based of a Spanish novel and La Esmeralda a French one) I’ve seen both the main dancers for each ballet wearing a costume with a black bodice and red skirt. I thought that translating that into a blackened red would be such a nice ode to it. This variation from Natalia Osipova is mind blowing.
Sleeping Beauty: Bluejay blue. In the ballet, the Bluebird has a variation and since I’m avoiding pink I wanted to find another color to use. I personally love the Bluebird variation, especially this version from the Australian Ballet Company.
Swan Lake: White with black glitter/sparkle. If you don’t know the story of Swan Lake, there’s a duality between the character Odette (dressed in white) and Odile (dressed in black). I wanted to represent both by having the white while having a sprinkling of black.
The Firebird: Bright red with orange glitter/sparkle. This is one of the more obvious colors since the ballet really represents the story. I would so love to have an eyeshadow that is so flaming to embody the spirit of the Firebird.
The Nutcracker: Bright turquoise with gold sparkle. This one is a little less obvious, but was inspired by San Francisco Ballet’s Arabian costume (credit to Examiner.com) and I really wanted to see it come to life in eyeshadow form.
To be continued once I gather more inspiration.

I’m not that great at eyeshadow but I’d like to think I’m pretty decent at eyeliner.
Life’s perfect when your liner turns out just the way you want to and your false eyelashes cooperate.

This little one’s name is Karson. He’s six months old and was born with a heart defect. He’s already gone through open heart surgery, and will likely need more surgeries, procedures, and tests as he gets older.
To help with the medical bills, his grandma is making and selling homemade caramels. They’re not very pricey- six bucks for plain and seven bucks for pecan, sea salt, or cayenne, and you get a half pound of candy.
Get a bag, get some nummy candy, and help a sick little kid in the process.
(I don’t know these people personally- I just think it’s a nice way to do good for someone in need. And yes, I bought some myself- one bag of sea salt caramels are heading to mymouthhouse as we speak. :3 )

I may have to buy myself some candy. :)
The state of health care in America: people are making and selling candy to pay medical bills to keep a newborn alive. This shouldn’t be happening. I hope in the near future Karson’s able to have full health insurance coverage.
That said, since this is reality right now, please consider buying some candy to help him.

So there are several feminist publications out there right now — I even contribute to some of them! But none of them are very specifically queer and feminist and talk about fashion, specifically, and not in that ‘groundbreaking’ way that discusses how fashion can be feminist. I know it can be, there are lots of people I know who know it can be, and it informs how we approach feminism and vice versa. I want to bring that discussion to the table. I want to share the stories about how fashion informs feminism and feminism informs fashion and how they help each other out. I want the discussion to move past how problematic the industry can be (because newsflash, we all know it can be, and how it is, and how it needs to change) and talk about how much fucking fun it is. Because how I present myself is fucking subversive. Because how I treat my body is a political statement. Because I am queer and feminist and yeah I like fashion, and it doesn’t make me a lesser queer or a lesser feminist for doing so.
There is no current publication that speaks about fashion from a feminist point of view that doesn’t consider the industry to be an inherently destructive structure. I think it needs to happen, and I think I can make it happen, even if what I create is really small, and maybe won’t be a huge series. I think I can do it and I think you all can do it too, and we can do it together.
I already have seed funding so this isn’t even a call for donations — I don’t need them at the moment. I just need your stories. Your contributions. Your artwork, your photographs, you — not your money. Do you identify as queer? Do you like fashion? How does it help you and give you power? How does art give you agency as a person? As a feminist? As a queer sea monster?
If you don’t feel like you’re represented in other mediums, if you want to talk about fashion from a feminist perspective, if you want to talk about wearing stockings as a dude, I don’t care what you talk about, throw your ideas at me, I want to hear them, I want to publish them. This zine will include art, poetry, interviews, photoshoots (if you live in or around NYC we can work on this together!!), articles, anything that can fit. Spill your guts and let’s make this shit happen. Email me: arabelle@fashionpirate.net and let’s work shit out.
Signal boost please! Luv u ok bye.
